IMMORTALITY

Immortality, a concept which has captivated humanity for centuries, is still one of the greatest obsessions of our existence. It is a classic concept that surpasses the limits of reality and pulls our imagination towards mysterious and fascinating places. Is there anyone who has never entertained the dream of living forever?

Literature has fed off this question from its very beginnings: from ancient Sumerian and Greek epics to those seductive vampires found in modern literature, immortality has embodied many faces and is still now a never-ending source of inspiration.

But immortality doesn’t only manifest itself in literary, artistic, or mythical forms. Modern science and technology have also explored this concept, and they have opened new perspectives about the extension of human lifespan. Could it be that, by means of science and innovation, we may find ourselves closer to immortality than we could have ever imagined? This ceaseless research of immortality elicits deep questions about our own being and our relationship with time. What does it mean to be immortal? To human beings, immortality is often regarded as a search for eternal life, physical transcendence, or permanence in collective memory. However, classical literature reminds us that immortality can appear in many forms. It can consist in the immortality of words, as the classics have shown us. It can consist in the immortality of actions, when characters leave a permanent footprint in history, or in the immortality of the spirit, when ideas and emotions keep echoing through the following generations.

These considerations and more will pervade the 5th edition of the Festival Clàssics. Focused on the concept of immortality, we have invited artists and thinkers to address the eternal and fundamental questions of art and philosophy: life and death.
So let us join together in this passionate inquiry of immortality. Let us unleash our imagination and examine the many forms in which this concept appeared through history, literature, and science. Are you ready to embark on this fascinating journey through the sea of time?

WHAT IS THE FESTIVAL CLÀSSICS?

With this festival, La Casa dels Clàssics aims to place classics in the center of today’s creative energies, through the promotion of dialogues between present and past to fuel contemporary culture with renewed strength and depth, and through the motivation of new readings of classic works which can help us reflect on the essential concerns of mankind.
